This 1949 Caldecott Award winner is a timeless story of the cycle of seasons, evoked through the lives of the woodland animals as they prepare in different ways for the coming of winter. Wild geese head south, squirrels and chipmunks busily store food, rabbits and deer grow thick winter coats, while other animals prepare for hibernation. After the coming of the big snow, the hungry woodland dwellers find a banquet of food put out by an old couple, who continue to feed the hungry animals until the arrival of the spring.
