As part of the Naturalist's Apprentice Series, the biography of the ornithologist Margaret Morse Nice is an inspiring book describing her lifelong interest in the study of birds, their vocalizations and behavior. In spite of the prejudices against women at the turn of the century, Nice combined the responsibilities of motherhood with her scientific pursuits. Considered the founder of ethology, the study of animal behavior, Nice contributed to the scientific research of birds, in particular the study of song sparrows, published numerous writings and also crusaded in conserving nature. Insets throughout the books suggest a variety of activities for children on watching birds, the use of field equipment as well as descriptions of common bird species that complement the textual descriptions of Nice's research.
