Tracing the life of Birute Galdikas from her childhood fascination with orangutans to her renown research of these primates in Indonesia, this photobiography provides insights into the fieldwork involved in primate studies as well as the unique contribution of Galdikas' research into orangutan behavior. Along with Jane Goodall and Dian Fossey, Galdikas was one of three researchers directed by Louis Leakey to undertake studies of the great apes. Descriptions of Galdikas' experiences in the remote tropical rain forests of Borneo, her observations of the social interactions and behavior of orangutans and her caring for orphaned orangutans are complemented by color photographs of Galdikas and her family as well as of orangutans in the wild. A personal note from Galdikas follows the text as well as information about organizations working to conserve the endangered orangutans.
